I've got a question for the internet. I've been listening to this cover of the Rogue Encampment theme for some years at this point. I played Diablo 2 at launch when I was 10. This cover makes me feel really nostalgic for the late 90s/early 2000s in a way that the official rendition of this soundtrack just doesn't. Is this cover similar to something else from that time period? It always makes me think of horror films (I know D2 is an action/horror game) for some reason.

This piece of music is a slice of genius. The beat is jaunty and hopeful while the key is dark and depressing. It's a mixture of feelings which don't normally go together, yet blended expertly so that they DO go together. And that's the spirit of the Diablo game. You want to be hopeful and for the ending to be good, but you fear that your hope is in vain and the ending is inevitable.

One of my favorite games! The original was awesome. Too bad it’s not widely available to play, not even on Nintendo… just the sequels. I prefer the original game. I wish I could play it one more time for nostalgia’s sake. Good memories! Killing Demons and gaining strength…much like the real world. We all have our own demons to battle. I have not played a Triple A game in 10 years, that industry is dead or dying. Small indie developers is where its at these days. I have not touched Diablo franshise since Diablo 2, and im not planning to play any of the current ones.

So. Diablo 1 was technically my first video game. But here's how it was. Four years old, my pops has a good Windows 98 gaming PC. Diablo 1 being one of his favorite games. I would sit on his lap and press the buttons he would tell me to press. It was how I learned my numbers and letters. Even though most of the keyboard didn't really do anything, he still did it to teach me my numbers and alphabet. About a year ago during a long weekend of mine off, we actually fired up Diablo 1 and sat together as he played it. And I even reached over just to hit buttons again. The old Blizzard was the best.
